While audiences have already gotten to see the first part of Ethan Hunt's final mission on the movie screen, they will now need to wait a little bit longer for the follow-up after a shake-up to Paramount Pictures' upcoming release schedule.

The studio announced Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 2 was going to be delayed from its original date of June 28, 2024, all the way into 2025, according to The Hollywood Reported. It will instead be released on May 23, 2025, making it almost two years from the release of Dead Reckoning Part 1 for Tom Cruise's reported final outing as super-spy Ethan Hunt.

The film will be dropping the Dead Reckoning Part 2 subtitle, as well, in favor of a new one to be revealed at a later date.

It appears the combination of the cast needing time to promote Dead Reckoning Part 1 along with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are the causes for the delay. Director Christopher McQuarrie was forced to halt promotion on the next Mission: Impossible film to give the cast the time-off they needed to fulfill media requirements for Part 1 before the strikes effectively shut down Hollywood. In addition, the belief within Hollywood is that several more tentpole releases scheduled for 2024 will be pushed to 2025 unless the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved in short order.

The delay is the latest in what has been an up-and-down few months for the Tom Cruise-led franchise coming off the release of Dead Reckoning Part 1. The film was released to largely positive reviews from critics and fans, with the general consensus being it was the best action movie of 2023 and one of the best entries in the franchise. However, it was considered a box office disappointment due to the inflated budget from shooting Dead Reckoning Part 1 and the eighth Mission: Impossible film concurrently, along with subsequent competition from major releases such as Barbie and Oppenheimer.
