The Jacksonville Jaguars finished the season with the worst record in the league for the second year in a row. Despite picking up their franchise quarterback first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, they were unable to find more than three wins. The rough season is largely attributed to the lack of quality coaching and holes in the 53-man roster.
Fortunately, the Jaguars have the entire offseason and the top pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to address these problems. They already got a head start on the process by hiring Doug Pederson as their head coach.
Here are the top three things that the Jaguars must focus on in the offseason to build a successful team for 2022.
3 Major Fixes for the Jaguars
3. Healthy coach and player relationship
The Jaguars fired Urban Meyer after only 13 games as a head coach in the NFL. In mid-December, former Jaguars kicker Josh Lambo accused Meyer of kicking him. His inadequate coaching style, along with allegations of abuse against him were too much for the team to work with.
Fortunately, they hired the perfect man to make things right in Jacksonville. Doug Pederson is the new head coach. He is most known for leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their first Super Bowl win in franchise history in 2018. He has the values and character to turn this team around and provide a healthy relationship with his players in the locker room and on the sideline.
2. Protection for the young quarterback
Article Continues BelowThe Jaguars began their rebuild when they chose Trevor Lawrence as their franchise quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, they aren't doing too great at protecting the future of the team. In his rookie season, Lawrence was sacked 32 times in 17 games, averaging nearly two sacks a game. He was the 15th most sacked quarterback this season and ranked 14th in the most yards lost from sacks with 238.
Lawrence also had 17 interceptions in the regular season, which is the most in the league (tied with Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford). Of course, some of the sacks and interceptions can be written off, solely because Lawrence is a rookie and is more prone to mistakes in the backfield.
However, he needs more protection. The Jaguars need to use their first overall pick on a strong, reliable lineman. Big Cat Country suggested two prime candidates for the position: Kayvan Thibodeaux from Oregon and Evan Neal of Alabama.
1. Someone for Lawrence to throw it to
As mentioned earlier, Lawrence had the most interceptions in the league, but not all of them were his fault. For a target to become a reception, both the quarterback and the receiver must be on their A-game. Unfortunately, there are no receivers on this Jaguars team that can constantly compete at a high level.
The Jaguars need to acquire a number one receiver. Marvin Jones is their main contributor, but he is not a top receiver in the NFL. The Jaguars need to look to the free agents on the market this offseason and consider signing a contract with an established, top-performing receiver, such as Davante Adams or Michael Gallup.
