The Jacksonville Jaguars are placing running back Alfred Blue on injured reserve, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. The team signed Blue in the offseason to a one-year deal after five seasons with the AFC South rival Houston Texans.

Blue hurt his ankle in Week 2 of the preseason against the Philadelphia Eagles. At the time, it was considered to be a minor ankle sprain. Here is how it happened, per Jaguars Wire's James Johnson:

Blue was in the process of running the ball up the gut when defensive lineman Vinny Curry made a tackle on him and rolled Blue’s ankle underneath him. After that play, Blue limped to the sideline and was ruled OUT when the second quarter rolled around. He exited the game with four carries for five yards on the night.

Blue was expected to be Leonard Fournette's backup. Though not a particularly efficient runner (career 3.6 yards per attempt), he's a power back who rarely does the wrong thing. He's a consummate pro who became a fan favorite in Houston, but maybe that's because the fans just wanted to yell “you're my boy, Blue!”

Without Blue, the Jaguars have one other back on the roster in rookie Ryquell Armstead, who was in concussion protocol during training camp. Jacksonville will likely look for another back after a litter of them were cut on Saturday.

Notable names to watch include Josh Adams and Jay Ajayi — each fit their want for power behind Fournette.
