Jacksonville Jaguars No. 1 overall pick and quarterback of the future Trevor Lawrence is just getting used to the NFL game. There have naturally been some ups and downs as he progresses through training camp. Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer recently talked about Lawrence's progress, and he invoked the name of one Tom Brady in the process.

“What makes Tom Brady the greatest quarterback of all time is he find ways to win,” Meyer said after practice this week. “Whether he's a Buccaneer or with the New England Patriots, he finds a way to win. I've had quarterbacks like that — they win.

“I don't know if we're going to tell in a year. He throws a nice ball, that makes him one of about 60 to 70 quarterbacks. Does he win games?”

Trevor Lawrence is viewed as one of the best quarterback prospects in recent memory, but none of that matters unless he's able to win games in the NFL. Meyer knows this and has high standards for the young Jaguars star, though he has yet to name Lawrence the official starter. It's a very coach-y thing to do given it's a foregone conclusion that Lawrence will start after going first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Here's what the Jaguars coach said about that:

“No, oh no,” Meyer said. “If he's not the quarterback we think we can win with — we haven't made that decision. It's not a four-year plan. It's not fair to these players. It's a one-year plan.”

The Jaguars play their first preseason game on Saturday against the Cleveland Browns. It will be great to see Lawrence out there for the first time in an NFL game, even if it doesn't count. There will be plenty of anticipation for this game as he begins his rookie campaign.
