The Los Angeles Rams lost in the Super Bowl in 2018. With a young and extremely talented core, they were expected to contend for years to come. That's still very much possible. However, it did not happen in 2019. The Rams went 9-7, not even making the playoffs.
While they likely are not desperate or anything like that, they might want to make some changes. Finding the right final pieces could be the difference between winning a Super Bowl and finding themselves out of the playoffs once again in 2020.
With that in mind, who is one player that could be a surprise roster cut this offseason? How about Eric Weddle? He has been one of the best safeties in the NFL for a long time. When the Rams signed him in the offseason, many believed that could be the final piece to the Championship puzzle.
Eric Weddle
That's not what happened though. The Rams took a step back, the defense took a step back as well. Weddle was far from the only problem. In fact, if you look at his stats he was really solid. The safety racked up 108 sacks and four pass deflections. However, he also had no interceptions, forced fumbles or fumble recoveries. He also struggled in coverage often.
Still, though, Weddle could be useful, right? Absolutely, but maybe not to the Rams.
Taylor Rapp also struggled at times. He was a rookie though and also showed lightning in a bottle pretty often. The potential is there and if he's given the chance could be a star. Meanwhile, John Johnson will be back from injury. He's clearly a superstar and should be built around.
Maybe the Rams will decide that Weddle is too important though. He is a phenomenal leader and there's still something left in the tank. Even if he isn't the same player he was a few years ago he's still got a lot to offer to a team.
At the same time though, he's set to give the Rams a $4,750,525 cap hit. That may not seem like all that much, but Los Angeles is top-heavy.
They have five players that are each set to take over $13,700,000 from the cap in 2020. So they will want to look to save money in other ways. Cutting someone who might not even be your starting safety is definitely a route they will at least consider.
Weddle could still bring something important to the Rams in 2020. However, the money they save by cutting him could mean they can bring in help at a position of higher need. Due to that, he might be a cap casualty this offseason.
