After a pair of victories to start the season, the New York Giants fell to the Washington Redskins 29-27 this past Sunday. The defense looked stout early on against Dallas and New Orleans, but the secondary broke down against Washington.

A big part of the issue is their lack of depth at safety. The Giants' free safety, Darian Thompson, is out with a lisfranc injury, and Nat Berhe is currently in the NFL's concussion protocol. Both Eli Apple and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie have nagging injuries which could keep them out of Monday night's matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, as well.

So, what can the Giants do?

Turning to the offense, for defense

On Thursday, Giants head coach Ben McAdoo said that the team has been putting some offensive players on defense at safety in practice. When asked if star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is one of those players who could play in the secondary, McAdoo didn't rule it out. McAdoo, from Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News:

“Never say never.”

The possibility remained unclear after Beckham himself was questioned:

We'll have to wait and see, I suppose. Most likely, we won't see a player of Odell's caliber at safety, save for an end of the game Hail Mary situation.
