Packers storylines

Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks with question marks around them

In 2020, the NFL playoff format expanded from 12 teams to 14, and that meant the creation of the No. 7 seed. Since that time, no seventh seed had won a playoff game, as they were always tasked with taking on hard opponents during Super Wild Card Weekend. That changed this season, though, as the Packers became the first seven-seed to win a playoff game.

Jordan Love spent years as the Packers' backup quarterback, but he proved that the time waiting and developing behind Aaron Rodgers was worth it. Love's 32 regular season passing touchdowns were the second most in the NFL, and he led the Packers to their best game of the season in the Wild Card Round. Love had 272 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 48-32 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

The rapid emergence of the young quarterback was unexpected by many, and the same can be said about the players around him. Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Christian Watson were somewhat of an unknown receiving corps coming into the season, but the trio is excelling now.

The Packers' win over the Cowboys came when Dallas was the highest-ranked team playing in the Wild Card Round in the NFC. The Packers will have the same challenge this week when they face the number-one 49ers, but they have proven they are up to the task of taking down these big teams.

49ers storylines

Christian McCaffrey next to Fred Warner

The 49ers are considered by many to be the front runners to win the Super Bowl. They obviously have to get past the Packers first, but they have more than enough talent to do so. Brock Purdy was in the MVP race for much of the season, and while he may not be the most talented quarterback in the league, he does enough to win games with tons of talent around him.

Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel form one of the best receiver duos in the NFL, and George Kittle is an elite tight end. Christian McCaffrey is even arguably the best running back in the league. The roster scored the third most points per game in the NFL (28.9).

The defense is just as impressive, as they allowed the third-fewest points per game (17.5). Nick Bosa has thrived with his former college teammate, Chase Young,  since the latter was acquired in a trade with the Washington Commanders. Fred Warner had 132 tackles this season, and Charvarious Ward intercepted the ball five times.

The 49ers and Packers are both two of the most prestigious teams in the NFL, but only one will be able to advance to the NFC Championship Game. Who do you think it will be?
