The numbers are in, and the box office did a little bit better than last year at this time.
Movies fared better than in 2022 after Christmas, being +19% higher, Deadline reports.
Box office numbers up slightly from a year ago
Topping the list is Wonka, which brought in $8 million at 4,213 theaters on Wednesday. This brings the total for the film to come to $102.5 million since opening 13 days ago. In 2023, this makes it the 24th movie to hit the $100 million mark.
Next up is Illumination/Universal's Migration, which brought in $6.26 million at 3,761 theaters. This brings the grand total for the animated film to $30.6 million.
Finally, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom came in 3rd place, bringing in $5.9 million at 3,706 theaters. It's now at $52.4 million.
Article Continues BelowEven though these numbers don't sound spectacular, considering they're all single-digit, it's up from last year. December 26 earned an estimated $26.9 million, which is +24% higher than 2022. Additionally, Wednesday brought in a total of $38.3 million, making it +19% more than the prior year.
Also in the mix is The Color Purple, a musical by Warner Bros. It earned $18.15 million on Christmas Day, but dropped to $3.9 million at 3,152 theaters Wednesday. Behind the musical was Sony's Anyone but You, earning $2.6 million at 3,055 theaters — bringing the total $13.3 million. Finally, The Boys in the Boat earned $2.46 million Wednesday, racking up its total $11.1 million.
New Year's weekend is next, and it's projected that between Wonka, Aquaman 2, and The Color Purple will earn about $20 million each.
The box office isn't exactly where studios and theaters want it to be, but at least it's a slight uptick in sales from a year ago.
