Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Movie has made its grand debut over the weekend, and with its debut, it has been setting and breaking a bunch of records, making it one of the most successful video game adaptation movies of all time.

According to movie blogger and commentator Erik Davis over on his Twitter page, the movie managed to pull in $71 million US dollars over the week, compared to the original Sonic the Hedgehog movie which pulled in $58 million US dollars. Another noteworthy mention is that this film also pulled in a ton of money for Jim Carrey, as the film also had the biggest box office opening of his entire acting career.

This movie is truly setting the standard for how video game adaptations should be done, and while a handful of other movies that came before it, such as Detective Pikachu, have also done a very good job at being faithful to its source material, other upcoming video game movies such as the Super Mario movie will have a lot to live up to. While Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto have been on the pulse of the film's development, many fans are still cautious, as the film studio, Illumination, is not exactly the best when it comes to their budget limits, and the cast choices for the Super Mario movie range from moderately acceptable, to downright questionable.

Regardless, Sonic fans have a lot to love and enjoy with this movie, and the records show that giving the fans what they want isn't always something that should be denied for the sake of ideological reasons, but should be embraced because when it comes to working with a franchise that has a well-established fandom, they hold the key to success.
