Whoever directs Spider-Man 4 for Marvel Studios will have a tall task. Jon Watts, who directed a trilogy of Spider-Man films for the MCU, has advice for whoever lands the gig.
Speaking to Collider in May 2024, Watts offered his two cents to whoever ultimately gets the job. He called his advice “practical” and told the director to not “waste” their time trying to do things like web-slinging practically.
“I have a very practical bit of Spider-Man advice, and I think every Spider-Man director goes through it,” Watts said. “It doesn't look good when someone is just swinging on a rope. You think you're gonna go in there, you're like, ‘we're gonna do it all practical. We're gonna get a stuntman. We're gonna be swinging around.'”
“It's boring. It looks dumb. It looks like a monkey swinging on a vine when you put someone on just a rope. Don't waste your time. That's my advice to the next Spider-Man director,” he continued.
Jon Watts directed the highly successful trilogy of MCU Spider-Man films with Tom Holland. Two of the three films made over $1 billion worldwide at the box office. He got his start directing films including Clown and Cop Car.
At some point, Watts was attached to direct the MCU's Fantastic Four film. He ultimately dropped the project and Matt Shakman will direct it. Watts created the upcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series for Disney+. He will also serve as the showrunner of the series.
Is there going to be a Spider-Man 4?

Tom Holland and Zendaya will return for a fourth Spider-Man MCU film. However, a director is not currently attached to the project. There was a recent rumor that attached Fast and Furious director Justin Lin to the project. No official announcement has been made on that front.
After being introduced into the MCU in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, Holland received a solo film the following year. Spider-Man: Homecoming came out in 2017 and was a successful reboot of the franchise. It grossed over $880 million worldwide.
Both of the following sequels, Far From Home and No Way Home, made over $1 billion at the box office. This further cemented Spider-Man as Marvel's biggest star. Of course, it's a no-brainer that more films are coming with Holland and Zendaya.
The Spider-Man role launched Holland's career to superstardom. Thanks to the MCU role, he has starred in high-profile projects such as Onward, The Devil All the Time, Cherry, Spies in Disguise, and Uncharted.
This year, Holland will make his return to West End. He first gained recognition for playing the title role in Billy Elliot the Musical. He will star in a production of Romeo and Juliet with Francesca Amewudah-Rivers. Later in 2024, the show will make its way to America and play on Broadway.
