Steve Carell has played an inept boss, a 40 year old virgin, an animated supervillain turned lovable dad, a biblical ark builder, a fake news correspondent, and a slew of other memorable roles — and it seems he's adding author/college professor to the mix. Carell is returning to TV, HBO specifically, for a college-set single-cam comedy series created by A-list veteran writer-producers Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses.

The untitled project is foregoing the pilot process due to the creative heavyweights involved and is getting a 10-episode, straight-to-series order from HBO. Lawrence and Tarses worked together on the long-running NBC medical comedy Scrubs and now they are reuniting for this series after many individual successes in between. Bill Lawrence has been in demand since being a showrunner on the popular Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso, and Matt Tarses was a long-time writer for The Goldbergs.

So what's the new Steve Carell show about?

According to Deadline, their new HBO comedy with Steve Carell “is set on a college campus and centers on an author’s (Carell) complicated relationship with his daughter.”

HBO & Max Comedy Programming's Executive Vice President Amy Gravitt said about the show, “The combination of Steve Carell and Bill Lawrence promises to be full of great laughs, warmth, and charm. We’re thrilled to be the home for this long overdue collaboration.”

Bill Lawrence chimed in, “HBO has long been a standard bearer of quality TV. Getting to do a show there with Steve Carell is an immediate career highlight for Matt and me. Nothing can go wrong now.”

Warner Bros. Television, the studio attached to the show, also reacted to the announcement. Channing Dungey, Warner Bros. Television Group Chairman and CEO, said “We’re so excited to be collaborating with the dream team of Steve Carell, Bill Lawrence, and Matt Tarses on what is sure to be a brilliant new series.”

She added, “Collectively, they have been at the center of some of the most iconic and successful shows in television history. With thanks to our partners at HBO, we look forward to bringing them together to deliver the next great comedy.”

HBO needed to add some fresh comedies to the pipeline after the recent series finales of long-running favorites Barry and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Besides the Steve Carell project, according to Deadline the premium cable network has also ordered two pilots with comedy personalities Rachel Sennott and Tim Robinson.

Steve Carell will next be seen in the Tina Fey Netflix comedy series The Four Seasons, and he'll be heard as the lead voice in the upcoming summer blockbusters IF and Despicable Me 4.

Bill Lawrence is currently the executive producer on the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, and is also executive producing the upcoming Vince Vaughn Apple TV+ series Bad Monkey.

For fans of Bill Lawrence, Matt Tarses and Steve Carell, expectations are now soaring for their freshly announced college-set comedy series at HBO.
