Why Switzerland Will Win

Switzerland has done enough to get to the knockout stage. Now, the Swiss will endure one of the most brutal fights it has endured with a showdown with the Italians.

The forwards have all the talent alone. Likewise, the goal-scoring has been solid. Breel Embolo has delivered one goal on one shot over three matches. Meanwhile, Dan Ndoye has one goal on seven shots, with his marker coming against Germany. Kwadwo Duah has delved one goal on four shots and played 26 minutes against Germany.

The midfielders have one job: To make crisp passes to set up goals. Substantially, Remo Freuler has two assists and will look to do more as he faces Italy. Michel Aebischer generated one goal and one assist, both coming against Hungary. Now, he searches for more scoring against Italy. But they need more from Grant Xhaka. So far, he has three shots over three matches but has not generated a score yet.

The defense has been solid. Ultimately, Silvan Widmer has 21 tackles and six clears. Manuel Akanji has generated 12 tackles and 21 clears. Meanwhile, Fabian Schar has been the best of them all, with 34 tackles and 21 clears. Ricardo Rodriguez has added 22 tackles and 10 clears. Overall, these defensemen have helped goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who has five saves with three goals conceded over the group stage.

Switzerland will win this match if the forwards can get good setup passes from the midfielders. Additionally, the defense cannot allow Italy to clear the zone.

Why Italy Will Win

Many believe Italy has been very lucky so far. Furthermore, there was a significant chance the Italians could have been eliminated had they not stunned Croatia at the very end.

The forwards need to do a lot more. Ultimately, there has been a lack of goals. Mateo Retegui needs to do more. So far, he has generated three shots but nothing else. Giacomo Raspadori has also been scoreless. Yet, he has also made 27 passes to set up chances.

The midfielders also need to try to build more scoring chances. Significantly, Nicolo Barella had one goal against Albania but has had none since. Jorginho must press the issue. While he had 73 passes against Croatia, he did not attempt a single shot. Lorenzo Pellegrini had one assist in the group stage. Now, he looks to do more.

The defense has been solid and possibly saved Italy from elimination. Giovanni Di Lorenzo has 34 tackles and five clears. Meanwhile, Alessandro Bastoni had a goal against Albania. Bastoni also had 26 tackles and 15 clears over the matches in the group stage. Likewise, Riccardo Calafiori had an assist against Croatia. Calafiori has also had 28 tackles and nine clears throughout the group stage. Overall, these defenders have done all they can for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has 12 saves while conceding three goals, including an incredible nine-save performance against Spain.

Italy will win this match if the midfielders can better set up scoring chances for the forwards. Next, the defense must tighten up and prevent the Swiss from cutting through their defense.

Final Switzerland-Italy Prediction & Pick

Switzerland has done a great job of delivering with scoring opportunities. Furthermore, the Swiss have done enough to make it to Round 16. But Italy has more talent. Yes, the Italians have struggled through the group stage. But they have the star power and the talent alone to survive another match. This has all the makings of a 2-1 match in the makings. Expect Italy to do everything it can to survive and overcome Switzerland.
