The Houston Texans apparently tried to bring former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney back to where it all started.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported the Texans made a late push to sign Clowney prior to his decision to join the Tennessee Titans:

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, one team that got involved late is the team that made Clowney the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2014. Yes, the Texans contacted Clowney before he made his final decision to sign with the Titans.

Houston selected Clowney with the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and he would go on to make three consecutive Pro Bowl teams between 2016 and 2018.

However, the Texans showed hesitance in extending Clowney, instead trading him to the Seattle Seahawks last September.

Still, Florio reported the Texans showed interest in Clowney in part because they realized how important the gifted edge-rusher could be to the Titans:

It’s unclear how far the talks went or whether Clowney considered a return to the Texans a viable option. However, the thinking was that the Texans not only recognized his potential value to their defense but also realized what he’ll do for the Tennessee defense, a team Houston faces twice this year.

Houston and Tennessee figure to contend for the AFC South title this season, and the Titans added a pass-rushing presence after dealing Jurrell Casey in the offseason.

Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson will have to worry about Clowney chasing him around the field, rather than playing alongside his former teammate.

The Texans open the season on Thursday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, who defeated them in the postseason last year.
