The return of True Detective on HBO has been met with largely positive feedback from critics who have praised Night Country for how it has been able to harken back to the series' debut season. However, it appears not all feedback has been welcome as showrunner Issa Lopez has set her sights on toxic fandom she believes have been review bombing True Detective's new season.

Lopez began going after “bros and hardcore fanboys” she believed were responsible for review-bombing the season premiere of True Detective Night Country shortly after the episode's premiere on HBO, according to NME. She asked, in a since deleted X thread, for anyone who watched the premiere to leave a review on Rotten Tomatoes to seemingly push back against the toxic fans she accused of bringing the show's audience rating down.

“So, if you liked last night’s episode of True Detective: Night Country, and have a Rotten Tomatoes account, maybe head over there and leave an audience review?” Lopez said in the since deleted posts. “The bros and hardcore fanboys of Season 1 have made it a mission to drag the rating down, and it’s kind of sad, considering all the 5 star ones.”

Lopez did roll back some of her language in a deleted follow-up post, saying she is grateful for the hardcore fans of the series' first season who have come along for the latest season starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

True Detective Night Country sits at a 93% fresh on the review aggregator, while the audience score has hovered around a 70%.

The latest season of True Detective takes the series to the frozen landscapes of Alaska and the fictional town of Ennis, which also serves as the home for those working in a nearby research station. Foster and Reis portray estranged, former partners brought back together to investigate the disappearances of eight researchers from the station.

True Detective Night Country is available to stream on Max.
