The Dallas Wings are set to begin the 2024 WNBA season on Wednesday at home against the Chicago Sky. The game is already sold out as excitement looms for the new campaign. Wings rookies Jacy Sheldon and Jaelyn Brown recently shared their thoughts as they prepare to make their WNBA regular season debuts, via the Dallas Wings on X (formerly Twitter).
“I'd say a lot of excitement,” Sheldon, who was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, said on Tuesday. “I think this group has been working hard through training camp and then the past couple days. We're just excited to get out there as everyone is and compete not against each other, but with each other now… For me, and I don't want to speak for all of us, but I think for a lot of us it's a lot of excitement.”
“I'm just excited to get out there and show what I'm capable of,” Brown said on Tuesday. “It's been a long journey, my playing overseas. And I'm just super happy to just show my talents and to play with the girls. I love the competition here. I'm ecstatic and ready to go.”
The Wings are looking to make another playoff run in 2024. Dallas understands that surpassing the top teams in the league such as the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty will be a challenge. Nevertheless, the Wings' roster features enough talent to make things interesting.
Jacy Sheldon, Jaelyn Brown will impact Wings in 2024
Dallas will need a complete team-effort to compete in 2024. Satou Sabally is expected to be out until August after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. Arike Ogunbowale will lead the way for Dallas, but the Wings still need the entire roster to make an impact.
The Wings played just one preseason game. They were able to defeat the Indiana Fever by a final score of 79-76 in the contest, however.
“As a team I think it was good for our preseason game just to get out there and play with each other,” Sheldon said later during Tuesday's press conference. “For a lot of us we haven't played together before… We've been getting more comfortable each and everyday. Excited to get the opportunity to go out there and play a real game. For myself, I think… Just settling down and being comfortable.
“Like I said, I'm getting more comfortable everyday that I'm comfortable with these girls. Really excited to get out there.”
The Wings are excited to have Sheldon and Brown on the roster. They both took different routes to reach the WNBA, and now they are set to play big roles for Dallas in 2024.
Sheldon, as mentioned earlier, was selected No. 5 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft out of Ohio State. Meanwhile, Brown played overseas after graduating from the University of California, Berkley in 2020.
Both players feature intriguing potential. If the Wings are going to play well in 2024, Sheldon and Brown will likely play an important role in the team's success.
