Cast members of Young Sheldon will appear in the spin-off, Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage.

This is a shocking development. Of course, Montana Jordan and Emily Osment were set to reprise their roles of Georgie and Mandy, respectively, in the spin-off. However, it doesn't sound like they will be alone.

Young Sheldon executive producer spoke with TheWrap after the series finale. They revealed that the Coopers will “pop up” in Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage “from time to time.”

“We love these actors and we love these characters, and they're certainly a part of Georgie and Mandy's life, so it's our hope that this is a spot where they can pop up from time to time and we can still tell their stories,” Holland revealed.

Holland also revealed that the spin-off will feature new characters alongside the Cooper and McAllister families. It could be assumed that Rachel Bay Jones and Will Sasso, who played Mandy's parents Audrey and Jim McAllister in Young Sheldon, will reprise their roles as well.

CBS just aired the Young Sheldon series final on May 16. The finale closed out a seven-season journey that the actors and characters went on. It was the first spin-off of The Big Bang Theory and depicted the early life of Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage).

Going back to The Big Bang Theory's roots

In the interview, Holland revealed the plan to go back to The Big Bang Theory's multi-cam sitcom roots. Young Sheldon diverted from its parent show, being shot as a single-camera sitcom. This allowed for the series to be more dramatic and branch out from the traditional sitcom aesthetic.

However, Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage will revert to the multi-cam production. For Holland and Co., the prequel must have its own “identity.”

What is Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage about?

Young Sheldon spin-off Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage stars Emily Osment and Montana Jordan.

As for the plot, Holland gave some clues about it. He revealed that Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage will pick up about a month after Young Sheldon's series finale. At that point, George Cooper (Lance Barber) has died and Sheldon has left to attend Caltech.

“[It's] pretty much contemporaneous,” Holland told TheWrap. “It's still 1994 and it's Georgie and Mandy with her family and raising their baby in Texas.”

However, the series won't “shoehorn” their pilot's story to piggyback off of Young Sheldon's series finale. Holland talked about that balance in his interview as well.

“It almost worked backward a little bit… watching them together and watching their relationship evolve, and [we] felt this would be a fun way to continue this world,” he said. “We wanted to really honor the seven-year run of Young Sheldon and end this show as strong as we could and hope that there [are] audiences that love Georgie and Mandy as much as we do.”

Georgie will go through a transformation in the series. The loss of George allows Georgie to step up, especially seeing that Sheldon has left for grad school after the Young Sheldon series finale. This can lead directly to where Georgie is when audiences meet him in The Big Bang Theory.

“We also know from Big Bang Theory that… after Sheldon went away to college and dad died that Georgie stepped up and helped his mom and sister through those moments,” Holland said.
