Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is going to take audiences on an adventure to explore what other wonders lay beneath waves, and the latest international trailer teases just how vibrant this world truly is.

The latest trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom comes courtesy of Warner Bros. Japan and showcases how much more vibrant the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and its neighbors are in the sequel. It includes shots of these neighbors' residents, who appear much less human than Atlanteans, along with some of the bizarre marine life that would only be found in a place like Atlantis.

One of the most striking comes at the start of the trailer with Jason Mamoa's Aquaman riding a giant, somewhat florescent seahorse across the oceans.

The trailer also provides some subtle hints about the film's plot, specifically the kind of threat the Black Trident poses beyond just the destruction it wreaks at Black Manta's hands. One shot seems to point to Orm, played by Patrick Wilson, possibly taking hold of the trident and trying not to succumb to its dangerous power. Other scenes continue to tease the dark, seemingly undead power the trident consumes its holder with to bring about the end of Atlantis.

Despite concerns about a possible delay due to the timing of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes over the summer, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is still on track to meet its Holiday 2023 release. The film was pushed back two days from December 20 to the 22, but it is still part of a potentially big December for Warner Bros along with the releases of Wonka and The Color Purple.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom picks up several years after the events of the first film with the titular hero firmly engrained as the king of Atlantis as well as a father. However, Black Manta returns to threaten Aquaman, his family, and his kingdom armed with the Black Trident, a dark but powerful ancient weapon long thought lost. In order to stop Manta, Aquaman will need the aid of his brother Orm and unite the other kingdoms against this new threat before it destroys them all.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to release in theaters on December 22, 2023.
