After a season lowlighted by Aaron Rodgers' season-ending injury, the New York Jets are looking to re-focus on football and get back to winning. But before training camp begins, the Jets saw one of their cornerbacks get into a bit of legal trouble.

Tae Hayes was arrested for marijuana possession in Alabama on Sunday, via Rich Cimini of ESPN. A second-degree misdemeanor crime, Hayes was released on a $300 bond. The Jets are aware of Hayes' situation but won't comment as it's now an ongoing legal manner.

That comment never came, as New York decided to release Hayes on Monday, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. It will be much more difficult for the cornerback to land another NFL contract as his legal situation looms.

The cornerback appeared in just one game for New York in 2023, making two tackles. Hayes has played for six different franchises over his NFL career, appearing in 14 games. With only 18 career tackles, two passes defended and a forced fumble, Hayes has been more of a special teams contributor than overall defensive standout.

And perhaps that's how the Jets planned to use Tae Hayes in 2024. New York already has an impressively stacked cornerback room with names like Sauce Gardner, DJ Reed and Michael Carter. If he remains with the team, it'll be hard for Hayes to carve out a true role on defense.

But for now, the corner will focus on how his legal proceedings play out. While he'll have to wait potential NFL punishment, Hayes will at least hope his legal repercussions are settled by the start of training camp.

The Jets decided that rather than wait, they'd rather cut ties immediately. New York is solely focusing on winning with Aaron Rodgers under center. They didn't want another distraction after going through an entire year full of them.
