Jared Goff appeared to be the franchise quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams after inking a four-year, $134 million contract extension prior to the 2019 season. But after completing two campaigns with the team since then, Goff is heading to the Detroit Lions in a trade for Matthew Stafford.
Given how these events rapidly transpired, Goff is still puzzled by what happened and when things went south:
“That’s the tough part right now is trying to figure that out, when did that happen?” Jared Goff said via Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. “Those are all conversations that I may or may not have, and try to figure it out. That’s the conversation to have.”
“When you first hear it, it’s difficult, it’s disappointing,” he said. “But you get so excited that you get a fresh start. You get to be somewhere you’re believed in. That clearly wasn’t the case here anymore, and when that happened, I don’t know.
The 26-year-old gunslinger definitely wants to have a conversation with the Rams organization to shed light on some details. There were rumors that Sean McVay had lost faith in Goff.

“There’s still some conversations to be had. Those will shed some light, obviously, and I’ll be able to understand things a little bit more. But at today’s given time, I want my message to be a thankful one to the city of L.A. and the Kroenke family [who owns the team], and to the Rams organization for my time with them.”
Despite the bitter ending, Goff remains grateful for the friendships he developed and the memories he gained throughout his five-year stint in Los Angeles.
Jared Goff was previously selected as the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The two-time Pro Bowler took the team to three postseason appearances, including a trip to Super Bowl LIII. He was dealt to the Lions in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick, 2022 and 2023 first-round picks, plus Stafford.
