Sunday Night Football: Cowboys vs. Giants history
The Cowboys and Giants have one of the biggest and oldest rivalries in football. The clubs have met 122 times previously, with the Cowboys holding a lead in the series, 73-47-2.
The Cowboys and Giants have played the second most Sunday Night Football games in the NFL. Fourteen times, the two have squared off on the gridiron during Sunday's prime-time game.
Dallas is America's team, and New York is potentially the biggest market in sports. Both teams are used to playing in big moments and in prime-time games, so headlining the league's first Sunday Night Football game of the year shouldn't be a challenge.
Cowboys vs. Giants storylines
If there is any pressure in the game, most of it is probably on Daniel Jones. The Giants' quarterback is entering his fifth season in the league, and he was just handed a massive contract by New York despite middling play. The Giants gave Jones a four-year, $160 million deal that locks in the former first-rounder as the team's franchise guy.
While the Giants gave Jones a huge deal, they were unwilling to lock up Saquon Barkley long-term. The Giants' running back has been much more productive than Jones, yet the team was only willing to give the star a one-year deal worth $11 million. Barkley is playing in a contract year, and he will want to start out the season hot to persuade the Giants (or someone else) to give him a big contract in the offseason.
The Giants are looking to build off of a 2022 season that saw them surprisingly make the playoffs and even win a playoff game. Still, the Cowboys are 3.5-point favorites over the Giants, according to FanDuel and DraftKings.
Dallas is an offensive powerhouse, but it is a prove-it season for the team. Their core has put up big numbers but fallen short of expectations for years now. Led by Dak Prescott, the team was third in scoring in 2022. The team hasn't advanced past the divisional round since 1995- changing that starts in their first game.
The Cowboys have a stacked offensive line, but starting left guard Tyler Smith's status for the game is still unknown. He has been dealing with a hamstring strain, but signs are pointing towards the up-and-coming blocker playing in the game. Also on the offensive line, Dallas handed Terence Steele a new deal this week. The team inked the tackle to a five-year, $86.8 million dollar extension, illustrating that the team will prioritize winning in the trenches.
Both teams have playoff aspirations for the season. The Cowboys have had the Giants' number in recent years. The team has won 11 of the last 12 games against Dallas, including four straight. Will New York be able to change their fate on Sunday night?
