The New York Yankees are on the verge of a four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers in this afternoon game. It is time to continue our MLB odds series with a Yankees-Tigers prediction, pick, and how-to-watch.

It has been a well-rounded and dominating series so far for the Yankees. They have gotten quality pitching, giving up just five runs in the series. The offense has been good too. They have scored 14 runs in the three games so far. The Yankees opened the game yesterday with two runs in the first inning, started by a Giancarlo RBI single. They showed their power in the second with a DJ LeMahieu home run to give them a 3-0 lead. After the Yankees scored again in the third, Jake Rodgers hit a home run for the Tigers to cut the lead. The Yankees would seal the game in the fourth though. It was back-to-back home runs from Gleyber Torres and Stanton to make it a 6-1 lead.

With the three-game winning streak, the Yankees are now 65-68 on the season. That still places them in last place in the division though and 10 games out in the Wild Card race.

Why The Yankees Could Cover The Spread

The Yankees have seen some power in this series. They have hit eight home runs so far in the three games. On the year, the Yankees are tied for 23rd in runs scored, 29th in batting average, 26th in on-base percentage, and 19th in slugging. Gleyber Torres has been a big part of the power surge as of late. In the last week, he has hit four home runs and three doubles. That has led to him driving in seven runs in the last week and scoring seven times. He is also hitting well in general. Torres is hitting .407 in the last week with a .500 on-base percentage.

DJ LeMahieu is also slugging well. He has four home runs in the last week as well. The issue for him is they have all been solo home runs in the last week and they are his only four RBIs. He has scored six times well while hitting .296 and having a .406 on-base percentage. Giancarlo Stanton has also been driving in runs as of late. He has six RBIs in the last week with the help of two doubles and two home runs. He is hitting .333 in the last week with a .357 on-base percentage. Stanton has also scored three times.

Still, for the Yankees, there has been a lot of boom or bust as of late. They are hitting just .212 in the last week with a .293 on-base percentage. They have 16 home runs in the last week. That means 32 percent of their hits have been home runs, while half of their hits have been extra-base hits. Also, 16 of their 29 runs in the last week come from a man driving home himself.

The Yankees will send Clarke Schmidt to the mound today. He is 8-8 with a 4.51 ERAS on the season. Last time out he went 6.2 innings giving up six hits and striking out five. Still, he gave up three runs with one of them being earned, and took the loss to the Rays. This month, he has an ERA of 5.04, but if the one bad start against the Braves is removed, the ERA is much better. In the Braves game, he went 2.1 innings and gave up eight runs. Outside of that in the other four starts, he had a 2.38 ERA.

Why The Tigers Could Cover The Spread

The Tigers' offense has been awful in this series and struggled as of late. In the last five games, they have scored just 11 runs, losing all five games.  The Tigers are 29th this year in runs scored while sitting 28th in batting average, 28th in on-base percentage, and 29th in slugging. The best bat in the last week has been Kerry Carpenter. In the last week, he is hitting .333 with a .455 on-base percentage. Parker Meadows also comes into this game with a solid streak at the plate. He is hitting .316 in the last week but has a .435 on-base percentage. In that time he has hit a double, and a home run leading to six RBIs. He has only scored one run in the last week though, and it was on his home runs.

Meanwhile, Zach McKinstry is getting on base a fair amount. He is getting on base at a .333 rate in the last week while hitting .263. In that time he has hit a double, two triples, and a home run. Still, the home run is his only RBI in the last week, but he has scored four times.

As a whole, only two guys on the roster have scored more than once in the last week. That is McKinistry and Spener Torkelson who has scored three times. Four different players have only scored one run because they hit a home run. All four of those guys also have their only RBI in the last week being driving in themselves. The Tigers are hitting just .189 in the last week.

On the mound today for the Tigers will be Matt Manning. He is 5-4 on the season with a 3.93 ERA. He has rebounded from a rough start to the month. In his first two starts, he went 11.2 innings giving up 12 runs with ten of them earned. since then, he has pitched 17.2 innings and given up four runs with just one earned. The Tigers have won each of his last three starts as he has a 2-0 record in them.

Final Yankees-Tigers Prediction & Pick

The Tigers will need Manning to pitch well to win this game. The problem for him is if he is off, he gives up home runs. In games he has lost this year he has given up nine home runs. In games he has won he has given up just two. If he can control the home runs, then the Tigers will win. That will not happen though and the Yankees get the sweep.

Final Yankees-Tigers Prediction & Pick: Yankees -1.5 (+128)
