At one time, Angry Birds was one of the biggest pop culture sensations as the popular mobile game spawned an entire franchise of comics, toys, cartoons, and even two animated theatrical releases in 2016 and 2019. The franchise looks poised to hit the big screen once again as one of the films' producers has confirmed production on a new Angry Birds movie is in production.

The news came from film producer John Cohen, who took to social media on Thursday to announce production was beginning on The Angry Birds Movie 3. Cohen served as one of the lead producers on the first two films and helped pen the story for the original 2016 release before stepping back as the sequel's primary producer.

The post was accompanied by a short animated announcement video featuring the previous films' lead character Red as he slingshots himself across the sky and past the film's logo. No release window and no cast was announced for the new Angry Birds film.

However, it appears Sony will not be the studio backing this film and it will instead be Rovio's parent company, Sega Sammy Group. Rovio was acquired by Sega Sammy Group in August 2023 and will reportedly serve as a subsidiary of the Sega Europe division.

2016's The Angry Birds Movie followed years of pop culture dominance by the Rovio-developed mobile game.

The Birds are Ready to Launch

The first film followed Red, voiced by Jason Sudeikis, who is somewhat of an outcast on his home island due to his appearance and extremely short temper. Chuck and Bomb are the closest things Red has to friends on the island, though he still typically keeps the pair at arm's length.

One day the island receives its first visitors in a very long time in the forms of a green pig claiming to be the ship's captain and another pig claiming to be the captain's assistant. While the rest of the island is welcoming the new guests, Red immediately becomes suspicious and his suspicions are later proven right as the pigs, under the leadership of King Leonard, attempt to take control of the island from the birds.

The Angry Birds Movie would ultimately be met with mixed reactions from critics upon release, though it would fare much batter at he box office with an estimated $352.3 million against a reported budget of around $73 million. Its 2019 sequel was met with largely the same reaction from critics as the first film, though it would not do as well at the box office with an estimated $152 million against a reported budget of around $65 million,

Alongside Sudeikis, the first two films featured a veritable all star cast led featuring comedy stars like Josh Gad, Danny McBride, and Maya Rudolph. The films also featured various big names including Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, and Charli XCX among many to appear in one of the films, if not both.

The Angry Birds Movie 3 is in production.
